Parenting Programs for National Cathedral School Parents 2020-2021

Strengthening the Parent-Child Relationship

Welcome NCS Parents!

NCS has partnered with PEP to provide 4 parent education programs during the 2020-2021 school year.

This page is where you can register to participate in any or all of the 4 programs. Before each event, we'll send you a link to connect via Zoom (make sure you agree to receive emails from PEP when you create an account). Afterwards, we will post audio, video recordings and the handouts here to access at your convenience.

All webinars are scheduled in the morning. Be sure to bring your questions to gain new insight, perspective and guidance to address your parenting challenges.

The theme is Strengthening the Parent-Child Relationship. PEP programs help parents understand the normal, and even desirable, behaviors of children as they develop, how to best support their child’s growth into adulthood, and how to strengthen their relationship with their child. And especially now, with children schooling from home, parents attempting to telework, and daily schedules upended, we'll explore how parents can provide certainty and structure through a strong parent-child connection.

2021 Programs

Note: Two PEP Parent Educators will be on hand to facilitate discussion and Q&A in two groups: parents of tweens (Grades 4 - 7) and teens (Grades 8 - 12).

February 18: Communicating with Tweens & Teens

Have you tried to “lay down the law,” reason or negotiate with your teen? Are you wondering how to have a real conversation? This workshop will give you new ways to establish and maintain a strong, loving relationship with your teen, including how to:

  • Gain an understanding of the teen brain to help you prepare and appreciate all that they’re going through
  • Learn new ways of relating to teens and numerous techniques to encourage communication that you can begin using today
  • Learn how to shift your mindset from manager to consultant and give up the illusion of control in favor of real influence

April 29: Kids & Anxiety: Strategies for Finding Calm & Shaping Solutions / 8:30 - 9:30 am

The prevalence of anxiety in both kids and adults is hard to escape. Busy family schedules, children feeling pressure to achieve academically, social conundrums, and the constant use of technology in our homes, makes life overwhelming. How can parents stay calm when everyone around them is anxious?

In this webinar, you'll learn:

  • Ways to truly understand your child's anxiety and why it's important
  • Methods to find calm for both you and your child
  • Strategies to help your child address their anxiety with problem solving skills
  • When to seek professional help

2020 Programs

September 29, 8 - 9 am: Positive Parenting and Setting Limits

Move away from punishment and toward using encouragement, consequences, limits and agreements, for an approach to discipline that stimulates cooperation and self-restraint. During these challenging times of 2020, children and families are experiencing many changes that make limit setting difficult for parents. Learn how to use problem solving and natural and logical consequences, balance increased freedom with responsibility and deal with challenges to your boundaries.

November 11, 8 - 9 am: Power Tools for Power Struggles

Frequent power struggles, whether between adults or between parents and children, impact relationships, especially while everyone is working and schooling at home together. Learn what happens when a conflict develops and gain insights into redirecting the energy in ways that tend to solve problems and bring people closer. We'll also cover some common power struggles around technology use.

Two PEP Parent Educators will be on hand to facilitate discussion and Q&A in two groups: parents of tweens (Grades 4 - 7) and teens (Grades 8 - 12).
